March 1, 2010

After a long day of work, I came home with a familiar feeling in my gut.  I knew what I needed, and I wouldn’t rest until I had it.  This was the lovely sight that I was greeted with just moments before selecting a wonderful snack from the jar of Nathan’s pickles:

Just look at those delectable little pods of robust flavor.  The taste, texture, and aroma of Nathan’s kosher dills absolutely screams freshness, which is why I was able to randomly select a couple of dills and have each one top the one that preceded it.

It’s almost as if these pickles realize just how satisfying they are, knowing full well that if a pickle tail or two slip past the quality assurance managers, they’ll be okay.  As seen above, the pickle furthest from the camera is sporting a trendy little tail, similar to that of Johnny Depp’s hair in his 1990 film, Cry Baby, or the once popular “rat-tail.”  Fortunately, this tail was so short, I went ahead and devoured it regardless of this occasional pickle mishap.  I give these pickles 5 out of 5 belly rubs for being total bad-asses.

This was the setting for an unexpected pickle encounter at a Saturday night social. The gentleman in the white shirt behind the new picklePAK is Archie, the individual who provided me with said picklePAK.  Mt. Olive recently started manufacturing these portable packages for movers and shakers like myself, allowing pickle enthusiasts everywhere to enjoy pickles on the go.

Overall, these pickles were great for two reasons… First, because they were a complete surprise, given to me as a gift from fellow pickle supporter, Archie.  Second, these pickles were portable, and packed with a flavor that caught me completely off guard.  Pickles as small as these are often crisp enough, too sour, or both.  Despite all of these common faults, my first encounter with the picklePAK was a good one.  4.5 out of 5 belly rubs.  Whoop Whoop!

Here’s a shot of the first pickles that I enjoyed in my new apartment.

This is just the first of many pickle experiences in my new surroundings.  I had high expectations from these pickles, and they didn’t disappoint.  Perfection achieved… 5 out of 5 belly rubs.  Boom.

March 9, 2010

Here is round 2 of pickles in my new residence.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not eating these pickles out of a diaper.  It just looks like this because of the way that the paper towel is shaped.  Crunchy, delectable, and tart, these Mt. Olive whole kosher dills really made this new apartment feel like home. 4 out of 5 belly rubs.  Until next time…

March 13, 2010

Here is a quick peek into my new fridge.  As you can see, I am well endowed with a good variety of pickle products.  Tonight, I was feeling like some Mt. Olive whole kosher dills.

This pickles were pretty good, but a little less crunchy than I had hoped for.  3 out of 5 belly rubs.

March 14, 2010

This is a little snapshot of a delicious snack that I enjoyed one day after work.  Quick and quenching, these pickles were just what the doctor ordered. 4 out of 5 belly rubs.

March 15, 2010

For economical, social and health related reasons, I’ve started packing my lunch.  Each lunch has featured a Mt. Olive picklePAK to satisfy that mid-day pickle craving.  This picklePAK definitely delivered the goods.  4.5 out of 5 belly rubs.

This is what I found myself dealing with when I came back to my apartment:

Just look at that freshly-cracked jar of Boar’s Head kosher dill spears.  Have you ever seen anything so inviting? These were the lucky ones that I picked out of the bunch.

These Boar’s Head spears were amazing.  The flavor was robust without being overpowering.  This could be a new favorite… Only time will tell.  Boom.  Another three down the pipe. Not too shabby, Boar’s Head.  Not too shabby at all.  5 out of 5 belly rubs.

March 16, 2010

Another day, another pickle…

This picklePAK was good, but it lacked originality.  2 out of 5 belly rubs.  Maybe tomorrow will bring a better pickle.

March 17, 2010

While packing my lunch, I was curious if today’s pickle experience would be better than yesterdays.  GOOD NEWS! This picklePAK went above and beyond what I expected it to be, especially after yesterdays lackluster experience.

Everything is A-Okay in pickle world.  5 out of 5 belly rubs.  BAM!

March 31, 2010

With March drawing to a close, so is another section at John Mudd Loves Pickles.  I know what everybody is thinking… Yes, March was a slow pickle month for me, and I am doing everything I can to correct that.  One way that I will do this is to eat more pickles from the Corner Bakery Cafe.  This establishment is just a short walk from my apartment and serves up a tasty pickle with most of the items on their menu.

As you can see, this kosher dill spear felt right at home with its grilled panini big brother.  Have you ever finished a pickle and thought, “God damn, I could go for another one of those bad boys,” only to be disappointed when you discover that you’re pickleless?  This was NOT the case when I sat down to dinner with my lovely girlfriend.  She was not as thrilled about her pickle as I was and, after taking a small nibble, decided to offer up her pickle side.

This pickle experience definitely helped bring me out of my pickle rut and allowed things to return to normal in my daily diet.  I’m giving these pickles 4 out of 5 belly rubs.  The only reason it lost points is because the second pickle had a small bite taken out of it and both pickles had a high number of seeds.  A solid end to a pickle dry spell and a nice end to a month.

I am married to John Mudd. Tonight I tried to impress him by saying, “look how much I love you – I am googling ‘I love John Mudd’” This got his attention and he stared at the screen with me waiting to see what would pop up. To our surprise, up popped “John Mudd Loves Pickles!” I screeched with the thrill of it all! How cool is a blog about pickles? (very). AND a blog about pickles with the same name as my very own John Mudd (in Arizona)! I love the blog, but I have to say that I honestly never thought about my relationship with pickles. Now that I’ve read your blog I realize that underneath it all, all these years, I never even noticed because it seemed so mundane, but I really wouldn’t want to imagine a world without pickles – or mustard. You’ve inspired me to explore this pickle relationship further – and the pickle-mustard relationship. Thanks!

Glad to hear that you two love the blog. It’s nice to hear that somebody actually changed the way they thought about pickle products. Hopefully, you’ll never look at a pickle the same way again… Check back often and enjoy your stay at JMLP!
